Yukon Quest
Teams crest the American Summit and descend to the 40 mile river. The long run from Eagle to Dawson city is considered one of the more challenging sections of the the Quest Trail. On the summit winds high winds not only add to the chill in the air but also sculpt large snowdrifts and sidehills that many mushers find difficult.
Lower down on the forty-mile thickets of willow and open leads support a healthy moose population. Every musher has a close -call story with an over grown beast with an attitude that made a quick leap of logic and considered the team a wolf pack that was about to attack it.
Kicking apart the sled appears to be the Moose approved method of discouraging visitors.
